Overview
Configured for 120 V a.c./d.c. digital signal acquisition in the ABB S800 I/O system, the ABB DI828 3BSE069054R1 (DI828 Digital Input Module) provides 16 individually isolated input channels. Each channel uses current limiting, EMC protection, optical isolation, an analog filter, and LED status indication. Channels 1 and 16 can provide process-voltage supervision for their respective input groups.

S800 I/O Backplane and Isolation Characteristics
The DI828 interfaces with the S800 I/O ModuleBus and draws current from the +5 V ModuleBus supply. It does not consume +24 V ModuleBus current. Therefore, system power calculations should use the specified typical 45 mA and maximum 60 mA +5 V values.
Each input channel provides individual electrical isolation. In addition, the signal path incorporates current limiting components, EMC protection, an optical isolation barrier, an analog filter, and a channel-state LED. Consequently, external 120 V a.c./d.c. input signals remain separated at the channel interface.
The module supports selectable digital filtering at 2.5 ms, 5 ms, 10 ms, or 20 ms nominal settings. The analog filter provides 5 ms ON delay and 10 ms OFF delay. These filtering stages determine how rapidly an input transition reaches the digital processing path.
Process Voltage Supervision
Channel 1 can supervise the process voltage for channels 2 through 8. Similarly, channel 16 can supervise the process voltage for channels 9 through 15.
When voltage supervision is enabled and the voltage at channel 1 or channel 16 disappears, the module sets the corresponding channel error condition. The Warning LED then indicates the supervision fault, while the error status becomes available through the ModuleBus.
The supervision arrangement therefore provides group-level process-voltage monitoring without requiring a separate supervision input for every channel.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What input voltage does the ABB DI828 accept?
A: The module accepts 77 to 130 V a.c. and 75 to 130 V d.c. for a logic “1”. A logic “0” corresponds to 0 to 30 V a.c. or 0 to 20 V d.c.
Q: Are the 16 DI828 input channels electrically isolated?
A: Yes. Each input channel has individual isolation and incorporates an optical isolation barrier in its signal path.
Q: How does process-voltage supervision operate?
A: Channel 1 supervises channels 2 through 8, while channel 16 supervises channels 9 through 15. Loss of the supervised voltage generates the corresponding channel error and Warning LED indication.
Field Installation Guidelines
- Install the DI828 with the specified S800 MTU configuration and TU851 keying arrangement.
- Verify the input circuit voltage before connecting field wiring. The module handles high-voltage 120 V a.c./d.c. digital signals.
- Keep a.c./d.c. field wiring separated from low-level analog and communication wiring to reduce electrical interference.
- Observe the stated maximum field cable lengths and the specified a.c. cable capacitance condition.
- Maintain protective earth and panel grounding according to the applicable installation standard.
- Terminate cable shields according to the control-system grounding design and avoid unintended shield current paths.
- Verify channel polarity and field voltage before energizing each input group.
- Confirm the Run, Fault, Warning, and individual channel LEDs after commissioning.
- When process-voltage supervision is configured, verify the supervision voltage at channel 1 or channel 16 before testing the associated input group.
- Check ModuleBus diagnostic information when a channel error or process-voltage supervision warning occurs.
- Maintain the specified environmental limits, including 0 to +55 deg C operating temperature and 5 to 95 % non-condensing relative humidity.
