Overview
The Foxboro FBM214 is a HART Communication Input Interface Module in the Foxboro 200 Series FBM family. It provides eight group-isolated analog input channels, each accepting a 4-20 mA signal with digital HART communication. Furthermore, it acts as a HART field device host, allowing the I/A Series system to request and receive digital messages from connected field devices for device configuration and communication.
HART Communication and Input Function
The FBM214 supports a combination of standard 4-20 mA devices and HART-enabled field devices. Each of its eight input channels accepts an analog current signal, while HART devices can transmit digital information over the same 4-20 mA signal wiring.
The module supports up to two digital HART messages per second from a field device. In addition, its message pass-through function supports HART Universal, Common Practice, and Device-Specific commands through the Intelligent Field Device Configurator (IFDC).
The module does not support HART burst communication mode. Therefore, applications requiring continuous burst-mode communication should account for this limitation during system configuration.
Channel Isolation and Power Supply
The FBM214 provides eight group-isolated analog input channels and a common isolated power supply for all eight channels. Alternatively, an external power supply can power the channels.
When a common external power supply serves two or more channels, a cable balun is required according to the module’s power-supply arrangement. This condition should be considered when selecting the field wiring and external power distribution configuration.
