FieldComm Group and FDT Group Merge to Accelerate Unified Device Integration for Industrial Automation
Unified Device Integration Roadmap Solidified Following FieldComm Group and FDT Group Business Combination

Coordinated Efforts Drive Harmonization of FDI and FDT Technologies
After acquiring FDT/DTM assets in 2024, FieldComm Group intensified efforts to standardize device integration. The SIC, including industry-leading automation suppliers and Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) such as OPC Foundation, ODVA, and PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), has harmonized FDI and FDT standards. This collaboration aims to deliver a scalable, intuitive solution for industrial automation control systems.
Key Enhancements in the Updated FDI Specification
The new FDI Specification introduces several important improvements:
Compliance with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)
Unified integration standard for both process and factory automation
Support for legacy systems, allowing upgrades without replacing infrastructure
Real-time OT/IT connectivity using the PA-DIM common information model
Compatibility with modern platforms and development tools
Intelligent device lifecycle management, including protocol tunneling for nested communications
These updates will allow engineers and system integrators to simplify device configuration while enhancing operational efficiency.
Implementation Timeline for the FDI Migration
FieldComm Group has defined clear milestones for adoption:
End of 2026: Release of the updated FDI Specification
End of 2027: Availability of the updated FDI Developer Toolkit
2029: Market release of registered FDI-enabled devices and systems
This phased approach provides manufacturers with a practical migration path, protecting existing investments while enabling modern, interoperable PLC and DCS systems.
Industry Leaders Endorse the Unified Device Integration Approach
Steve Biegacki, SIC chair, emphasized, “Modern industrial systems are complex, yet interoperability must remain seamless. Our unified FDI solution ensures OT/IT data integration while supporting innovation.”
Stefan Hoppe, OPC Foundation president, added, “We support harmonizing FDI and FDT technologies to ensure robust device integration for OPC UA users.” Similarly, ODVA and PI leadership acknowledged the initiative’s importance for EtherNet/IP and PROFINET users.
Driving Smarter Manufacturing with Unified Integration
The updated FDI specification enables intelligent, responsive automation operations, unlocking the value of industrial data. Manufacturers can leverage unified device integration to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and enable predictive maintenance. Moreover, standardized connectivity simplifies integration across control systems in hybrid factory environments.
