Bachmann Industrial Control and Communication Architecture
The MX200 processor modules use the Bachmann M200 backplane interface for I/O subsystem communication. The integrated process-image controller provides cyclic and event-driven single-channel access to connected I/O resources.
Furthermore, the processor generates synchronization pulses for I/O and fieldbus operations. This allows application tasks to coordinate process data acquisition and output handling within the controller architecture.
The Ethernet interface provides 10/100 Base-TX communication. MX213 and MX220 provide two RJ45 Ethernet ports, while MX207 provides one port. The Ethernet interfaces support AutoNegotiation and AutoCrossing.
The serial subsystem includes one RS-232 interface and one configurable RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 interface. In addition, the integrated CAN interface supports CAN, CANopen, and J1939 communication at rates up to 1 Mbit/s.
The processor supports priority-controlled multitasking. Therefore, multiple application programs can execute under real-time scheduling according to assigned task priorities.
Memory and Storage Configuration
Each MX200 processor provides 256 MB working memory with partition support and a ramdisk function. The processor also provides 512 kB NVRAM for retentive data.
The integrated mass-storage capacity is 64 MB. However, MX213 and MX220 units with hardware revisions <= KR15x.000 provide 16 MB of internal storage instead.
Removable storage uses a CompactFlash interface through the side cover. A front-side PC Card interface also supports 16 MB, 32 MB, and 64 MB media on applicable hardware versions.
The supplied data states that storage media are not included unless explicitly specified in the order text. Certain MX213 and MX220 hardware revisions also omit the PC Card connector.
Processor Model Matrix
| Model | CPU Clock | Ethernet | Storage Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| MX207 | 266 MHz | 1 x 10/100 Base-TX | 64 MB integrated storage |
| MX213 | 266 MHz | 2 x 10/100 Base-TX | 64 MB or 16 MB depending on hardware revision |
| MX220 | 433 MHz | 2 x 10/100 Base-TX | 64 MB or 16 MB depending on hardware revision |
The processor architecture remains x86 / AMD LX across the MX200 models. The MX220 provides the highest specified clock frequency at 433 MHz, while MX207 and MX213 operate at 266 MHz.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Which MX200 models provide two Ethernet interfaces?
A: MX213 and MX220 provide 2 x 10/100 Base-TX RJ45 Ethernet interfaces. MX207 provides 1 x 10/100 Base-TX interface.
Q: What CAN communication functions are supported?
A: The integrated galvanically isolated CAN interface supports CAN, CANopen, and J1939. The specified communication rate reaches up to 1 Mbit/s.
Q: Does every MX200 hardware revision include the PC Card connector?
A: No. The PC Card connector depends on the hardware revision and part-number configuration. The supplied data identifies specific MX213 and MX220 versions without the connector.
Field Installation Guidelines
- Install the processor module into the compatible Bachmann M200 backplane and secure the module mechanically before energizing the system.
- Confirm that the backplane, processor, and connected I/O modules use the specified Bachmann system configuration.
- Route Ethernet, serial, USB, and CAN wiring separately from high-current power conductors where practical.
- Use appropriate cable shielding and terminate shields according to the plant grounding concept.
- Keep CAN wiring within the electrical installation rules applicable to the selected CAN topology and termination arrangement.
- Verify the connector type and pin assignment before connecting RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, CAN, or Ethernet interfaces.
- Confirm the installed hardware revision before using CompactFlash or PC Card storage functions.
- Check the CPU status LEDs after startup. Use the RUN, INIT, and ERR indicators to verify controller operating status.
- Set the two 16-position rotary hex switches according to the required operation, programming, boot, or address configuration before commissioning.
- Maintain the specified ambient operating range of -30 deg C to +60 deg C and provide adequate enclosure airflow around adjacent modules.
- Do not assume hot-swap capability unless the installed M200 system documentation explicitly permits live module replacement.
- Before commissioning, verify application configuration, I/O synchronization, fieldbus communication, and processor status under the actual installation conditions.
