Bachmann Digital I/O Signal Architecture
The DIO216/x and DIO232 modules combine digital acquisition and output switching within compact I/O hardware. Therefore, selected channels can interface directly with discrete field devices according to the configured input/output function.
The DIO216 family provides up to 16 digital channels, while DIO232 supports up to 32 channels. In addition, DIO216 supports three-wire field wiring without separate potential rails. DIO232 provides a configurable input filter from 40 us to 365 ms, with 3 ms as the default value.
The modules accept high-level input signals from 15 VDC to 34 VDC and recognize low-level signals from 0 VDC to 5 VDC. Furthermore, external supply inputs include reverse-polarity protection and provide 500 V galvanic isolation from the system.
For industrial control outputs, DIO216 channels can switch up to 1 A per channel, while DIO232 supports up to 0.5 A per channel. The modules also provide green LEDs for individual channel status monitoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can DIO216/x channels operate as either digital inputs or outputs?
A: Yes. Up to 16 channels can be configured as digital inputs or outputs, depending on the module variant and application configuration.
Q: What input filtering does DIO232 provide?
A: DIO232 provides a configurable input filter from 40 us to 365 ms. The default filter setting is 3 ms.
Q: What electrical protection does the external supply provide?
A: The external supply supports 18 VDC to 34 VDC, includes reverse-polarity protection, and provides 500 V galvanic isolation from the system.
Field Installation Guidelines
- Verify the module variant before connecting field wiring because channel count and output-current limits differ between DIO216 variants and DIO232.
- Confirm that the external supply remains within the specified 18 VDC to 34 VDC range during normal operation.
- Observe input polarity and verify high-level and low-level signal voltages before commissioning digital inputs.
- Route digital signal wiring separately from high-current or high-noise conductors where practical to reduce electromagnetic interference.
- Use appropriate field wiring for the maximum output current assigned to each channel.
- Verify the connected load before enabling output channels, particularly for contactors, relays, pneumatic valves, and hydraulic valves.
- Check the green channel LEDs during commissioning to confirm the expected input or output state.
- For DIO232 installations, select the input filter according to the switching characteristics of the connected field device.
- Ensure that wiring terminals remain mechanically secure and that exposed conductors cannot contact adjacent circuits.
- Connect protective earth and system wiring according to the applicable Bachmann installation documentation and site electrical standards.
