Overview

Most output modules include built-in surge suppression to minimize the impact of high-voltage transients. However, you should add an additional suppression device when controlling inductive devices, such as relays, motor starters, solenoids, or motors.

Additional suppression becomes particularly important if the inductive device is in series with or parallel to hard contacts, such as push buttons or selector switches. Install the suppression device directly across the coil of the inductive device. Doing so reduces voltage transients caused by interrupting current and helps extend the lifespan of switch contacts.
